Description +-

This painting was part of the artist's exhibition "Postgenderismus" in Stuttgart, Germany (Summer 2021). This painting is part of a series that raises questions on society's frameworks of masculinity, femininity and stigmatisation. Berger references Judith Butler, an American philosopher, and her performative model of gender. Butler does not see the gender categories "male" and "female" as natural or absolute. The binary is constructed through the repetition of everyday practices. So the artist questions whether repetition against the societally imposed patterns of gender can alter the terms of masculinity and femininity.

Artist +-

Tamara Berger

Tamara Berger was born in Belgrade, Serbia, and currently lives with her family in Germany. Alongside painting and exhibiting her work around Germany, Berger teaches art and travels often to artist residencies. One of her primary focuses is the role of a woman in traditional art, and in contemporary societies. American Philosopher Judith Butler and her idea of gender as performative and fluid are often source of inspiration in Tamara´s works. She questions the concept of binary, and speaks for gender equality, and for the rights of women and queer people. Tamara is great admirer of Asian cultures, with a big interest in Japanese culture in particular. She views this artistic interest as similar to that of Vincent van Gogh, who she uses as a point of inspiration.
