Recent major transitions, which have happened both globally in the face of pandemic and locally to the artist with the war situation in Ukraine, have triggered a disorienting dilemma on a collective level. There have been challenges for the poetry of day-to-day life with a sense of isolation, alienation, and a state of hopelessness. This visual explores “conceptual maps.” These explore both individual and collective perceptions of reality: in constant change and allows for the exploration of fundamental questions.

Bortsova asks: "Are we only accepting the reality of the world presented to us ignoring other perspectives of the truth? Are we aware and capable of acknowledging the blurry line between virtual and real, visible and invisible?" This work highlights the closing of borders due to the pandemic, to search the man's place in the global world, a position which suddenly narrowed. The offline limitations yet the online boundless openness. The problem of the pandemic was joined by the unresolved problem of migration, which has become aggravated throughout the World.

Kateryna Bortsova

Kateryna Bortsova is a painter and graphic artist with BFA and MFA in graphic arts. Her work is eclectic, exploring issues of modernity, migration and economics. Seemingly interested by the philosophy behind social and cultural standards, Bortsova's work plays a crucial part in communicating her perception of reality. Since Russia invaded Ukraine, Bortsova had to leave her home town and escape to Germany. This experience heavily informed her work and view on society - especially with her practice continuing during the two months of shelling within Ukraine before she left.

Bortsova's work has been exhibited internationally: Taiwan, Moscow, Munich, Spain, Italy, USA, and more. She is has won awards for her realism within Factory Visual Art, along with the 2015 Emirates Skywards Art of Travel competition.
