Description +-

The concept of this work directly relates to the travel and self-realisation of man in a globalised world. Self-propulsion is in philosophy a category that expresses the change of an object under the influence of its inherent contradictions, factors and conditions. Bortsova juxtaposes the theory of self-movement and philosophical theory of Plato's cave. According to Plato, the ultimate aim is to get to the light of the Sun, real truth, the higher reality, not its reflections where one can exist in the shadows of their own misconception of reality.

This work can also be argued to have a direct and indirect reference to the plight of refugees. The meaning of being home; where home is; and how politics can deepen already-existing geographic borders.

Artist +-

Kateryna Bortsova

Kateryna Bortsova is a painter and graphic artist with BFA and MFA in graphic arts. Her work is eclectic, exploring issues of modernity, migration and economics. Seemingly interested by the philosophy behind social and cultural standards, Bortsova's work plays a crucial part in communicating her perception of reality. Since Russia invaded Ukraine, Bortsova had to leave her home town and escape to Germany. This experience heavily informed her work and view on society - especially with her practice continuing during the two months of shelling within Ukraine before she left.

Bortsova's work has been exhibited internationally: Taiwan, Moscow, Munich, Spain, Italy, USA, and more. She is has won awards for her realism within Factory Visual Art, along with the 2015 Emirates Skywards Art of Travel competition.
