Description +-

Here, Teague references the media over the last decade and how it has been saturated with, and characterised by, increased numbers of people seeking asylum, as topics around immigration becoming the most contentious global public issue. As the asylum debate plays out in media and political spaces, the negative representations of asylum seekers as illegal, chaotic and a threat to the national citizenship order have become more predominant. In her work, Teague frames how the coverage may have contributed to the construction of a ‘moral panic’ and mistrust among the public; thus, leading to poor community relations in host communities of refugee dispersal.

Teague accompanies her piece with the text: "Seeking asylum is a human right - Article 14: “Right to Asylum” Universal Declaration of Human rights. This means everyone should be allowed to enter another country to seek asylum." This artwork challenges us to not lose touch of our humanity and remember to always question the realities (or media narratives) that are presented to us.

Mikarla Teague

Mikarla Teague is an Australian based artist who has exhibited both nationally and internationally within Human Rights Showcases, Organisations and Exhibitions. Teague's passion lies within the purpose of her artworks: to question and confront the realities which have been imposed onto society. Her primary intentions are to produce works that tell a story while dismantling the status quo. By shining a spotlight and creating awareness, Teague empowers and inspires individuals to stand up and act. The artist is a strong advocate for the power of the arts as an alternative form of mental health therapy. With the belief that art serves as a non-threatening avenue for self-expression, she recognises its visual language as allowing people to communicate thoughts and feelings otherwsie too difficult to put into words.

Donation +-

Based on our agreement with the artist, 15% of the pre-VAT price excluding frames will be donated to support the social movement. Donation will be given to support the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.
