This work references the more than 89 million displaced people in the world today and 36.1 million who are refugees who have fled to another country. Being a historically high figure, and a staggeringly high number of people in need of protection, Teague highlights how it is entirely possible to offer all displaced people a dignified life, if we only have the will to do so.
This artwork aims to address the Australian Government's failure to address serious abuses to asylum seekers, further deterring asylum seekers from arriving in the country by boat. Australia forcibly transfers refugees and people seeking asylum to Nauru – a remote pacific nation, detaining them for prolonged periods in inhuman conditions; thus, denying them appropriate medical care, both physically and mentally. Teague hopes to underscore how the Australian government has violated the rights to be free from torture and other ill-treatment, and from arbitrary detention, as well as other fundamental protections.
"Australia’s apathetic treatment of asylum seekers, makes me embarrassed to be Australian." -Mikarla Teague
