This artwork seeks to convey the racial and capitalistic nature of culture within a globalised society. Commenting on uniformity from globalisation, Wijnhoven directly talks to the notion of cutting down other cultures for one to become triumphant - arguably, the one of the white straight man. There is also a reference to the western-modernistic idea that nature is there only to serve men, thus, leading to its destruction; while, also citing patriarchal systems through the violent nature of the male to seek control and power over the female. Winti is an Afro-Surinamese traditional religion that originated in the colony Suriname, part of the Dutch Empire.

Leo Wijnhoven  

Leo Wijnhoven is an experienced artist from the Netherlands whose work has been featured in solo and group shows internationally. Exploring a critical approach to western-modernism, Wijnhoven creates realist figurative paintings in oil on linen that feature characters and scenes from everyday life. He strays from the art trends of the 20th and 21st centuries by imposing his hyperrealist - and sometimes surreal - style and investigating themes of neoliberalism and globalisation.

Wijnhoven labels and critiques various strands of Western modernism. He explores ideas ranging from materialism and mechanism to hierarchical control and the exploitation of nature.
