Bolle created this artwork with the memory of being told that her dad was a Holocaust survivor. This sought to explain the anger and aggression noted within her father, leading to a turbulent home life for the artist. She was told that her dad was passed over to her grandma days before the murdering of his parents in Auschwitz, and so discovered her grandma was in fact not a a blood relation. Bolle had little knowledge of mental health, grief or even the Holocaust at the time. The artist's mother was unaware of this background at first. Growing older, she slowly began to comprehend not just what had happened to her family but what had happened to her mother: the enormity of marrying someone who was holding such big secret close to their chest. The artist writes: "In so many ways she had married a stranger, somebody who didn’t exist. The man that she had fallen in love with only existed inside her head. I was so angry for her about this, until one day when I realised. Everyone I have ever loved only ever existed inside my own head."

Shirani Bolle
London born multi-disciplinary artist Shirani Bolle is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor and a Sri Lankan immigrant; it is the unlikely union of these two backgrounds that has heavily influenced her work. Bolle uses subjects such as war, capitalism, racism, religion and nature, alongside more personal themes, to explore the existential questions on identity and meaning. The artist's work protests against the, often unquestioned, structures of society. Bright, graphic and colourful, they create noisy and brash work that is demonstrative of the deafening, seemingly inescapable society that we have built. Bolle is visually optimistic in her unravelling of the conscious human existence. She combines her art with a knowledge of eastern philosophy to render open-ended questions; of which, society usually suffers from ignoring.
Shirani has exhibited in London and been featured in publications across the UK and Ireland. She currently lives on the West coast of Ireland with her husband and two young daughters.
