Description +-

This is a still taken from the moving image project 'Beautiful.' Frayne’s work visualises the figure and poetry of 20th century civil rights activist Pauli Murray: a person now viewed as a symbol of the importance to explore one’s gender and sexual identity.

Last night you were a river
Swollen with March thaws,
Ruthlessly tearing my roots
Until, rudderless, I was borne,
A fragment in your flood.
When you are once more self-contained
In your swift channel,
Shall I find reassuring earth
Beneath me and, restored,
Let dancing shadow mark your passage?

From the title to the final phrase, the poem suggests images of loss of oneself, of control and an unsure future. Most of us have experienced a time when outside events have shaken our sense of identity. Leaving feelings of fragmentation and inability to find solid ground.

Above is a compilation of Pauli Murray's poetry compiled from The Dark Testament (1970), authorised by The Pauli Murray Foundation.

Emma Frayne-Ford

Emma Frayne-Ford is a Welsh born Video Artist who grew up in the up in the 80/90s as the politics of Thatcherism brought the greatest civil and social unrest and violent protest that the UK has ever seen in modern times. After nearly 40 years of neoliberalism, the very same solutions are now being offered to the same problems, with the same intended victims. Emma’s artistic expression depends upon the use and
combination of super 8 and digital 16 mm cameras. Her works focus on the ideas behind the fundamental human experiences and shifting landscape of western politics that puts GDP before people. Emma gained a Masters Degree in filmmaking and developed her visual skills by exploring the methods and use of analogue
formats within her experimental films.
