Description +-

In the artist's 'Ecofeminist' series, she confront patriarchal attitudes of domination over, and the habitual exploitation of nature. The paintings describe an alternate ‘ecofeminist’ viewpoint that recognises equality and justice not only between race, class, and sex, but also between humans and our non-human kin. With a ‘Female Gaze’, Baker depict women’s bodies in close intimacy with the earth, projecting the artist's own relationship with nature; all meanwhile articulating a universal message of human-nature connection. Baker's work is informed by science, Indigenous environmental philosophies, and by observations in wilderness landscapes. On site she paints, sketches, and photographs natural elements and how people interact with them. In the artist's studio Baker works with combinations of oils and acrylics on canvas or wood panels, often incorporating ground minerals, plaster, gold leaf, and other media.

Adrian Baker

Adrian’s art is informed by science, Indigenous environmental philosophies, and knowledge garnered from on-site explorations and investigations in wilderness settings. Working with both found natural materials and manufactured mediums, she creates visual commentaries on the wonders of the natural world that promote appreciation for our non- human kin. Her work initiates reflection on the connections between humanity and nature, conveying a message of optimism for the future.

A native of Canada, Adrian was in Montreal, earned a BFA in Toronto, Ontario, and her MFA in Vancouver, B.C. Her paintings have been exhibited in solo and juried shows in Canada and the U.S. and have been featured in international publications. In 2009 she was selected to be the artist-in- residence for the Bermuda Masterworks Museum. Adrian has received numerous federal and municipal government commissions to create outdoor public art installations. Her collaborative fibre art installation ‘NetWork’ was one of the ten finalists for the 2021 Berlin Social Arts Award. Throughout her career, Adrian has been teaching art classes and workshops, and delivering lectures to art associations. Committed to art activism, she regularly donates artwork and curates art events for non-profit organisations.
